The $600.00 Chair

October 20, 2007

This is a personal post (I said it would happen from time-to-time and now it is), so if you want to read it, you can click on the ‘More’ tag and check it out. Otherwise, just scroll on down for some Stupid Wedding Crap goodness.

George and I are chair shopping. Actually, he’s in the other room studying Economics and I’m calling local furniture stores to see if we can come and sit on their chairs. The original plan was that I would go to Ikea and pick out something I liked that matched my vision for the future decor of our 497 square foot apartment. But George kept talking about how much he loves the 35 year-old chartreuse Eames Lounge Chair that his dad has and how much he wants a chair just like that.

And you know what? I want a chair just like that too. Ideally, we could just get the Eames chair and call it a day. Sure, it would cost, oh just $4,125 plus $200 in shipping (add an extra 10% for ‘White Glove Service’), but what’s the cost of a used Toyota or Honda when you can have a lifetime chair?

Palliser Chair

This is our lifetime chair (well, a picture that looks roughly like the chair I am thinking about). We aren’t getting the Eames, but we are in the market for a chair that costs an embarrassing amount of money: approximately $600.00. This is an awful lot for a chair, I know. But this is a chair that we’ll buy knowing that it will last for decades, that it will wear well, that it will be the chair that everyone wants to sit in when we settle down for a game of cribbage, that it will be wide enough that when our children are toddlers they can sit in the chair together with cozy afghan spread over them and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade every Fall. (I don’t know why I said that thing about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I’ve seen it all of twice in my life (yes, on TV) and one of those times was my freshman year in college, so I really have no idea why I’d have my kids watch it. Though, you have to admit that the Rockettes are stunning.)

So, goodbye Ikea, hello rest of my life.

We’re looking at $400 ottomans now (to replace our coffee table with functional storage spaces with fliptop trays). More exactly, we’re looking at craigslist.org for serendipity, because we’re embarrassed that we want $400 ottomans. But we know we’ll probably knuckle under sooner or later.

Lee - Wait, you didn’t just get another man-coffee-table?

Are you thinking about one of those large leather ottomans that opens up to reveal storage? If so, the area just East of Southcenter has a discount furniture place (last week there was a guy outside it with a zombie mask and sign a la Flight of Conchords) that might fit your needs. I saw ones there that ranged in price from $150-$400.

Scouting Craigslist can’t hurt. We’d been searching off and on for YEARS for the perfect buffet…finally given up on buying new and started scouting antique shops. Then I found the perfect mid-century modern piece for $60 on Craigslist, and the seller was apologetic about it! She’d refinished it and her toddler “helped”…in a really bright light, if you know where to look, there are a few tiny fingerprints. HORRORS! We think they add to the charm.
